Richard has had a real love and passion for music ever since he was given his first violin lesson at the age of eight. He took full advantage of all the opportunities presented to him whilst studying including an amazing tour of the USA with the County School Orchestra.
After a brief time playing with the Royal Engineers band and orchestra, Richard went on to study music at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire where he developed a real love not just for the violin but also conducting orchestras and choirs. He studied orchestral conducting with Jonathon Del Mar and choral conducting with Simon Halsey and went on to major in violin, piano and conducting.
Since graduating with his B.A Hons degree in 1992 Richard has enjoyed a rewarding and successful career both as a freelance violinist and choral and orchestral conductor. Some of his many highlights include conducting the Brahms Requiem at the Harborne Music Festival and being musical director for over 50 musicals including two premieres at the iconic Birmingham Hippodrome.
As a violinist Richard plays all over the country. If he isn’t with his string quartet (Exe Valley String Quartet) then he is off playing at weddings and corporate events as a solo violinist and electric violinist. He is also a guest violinist with many orchestras and ensembles across the South of England.
