Belinda Phillips – Rock Choir Torquay
After more than 23 years running a care home in Devon, Belinda was approaching retirement when her daughter gave her a simple piece of advice.
“Do something for you, Mum.”
Work had been a huge part of Belinda’s life and, because it was so demanding, over the years she had lost contact with many of her former nursing colleagues and found herself with a much smaller circle of friends.
Rock Choir had been appearing regularly on her Facebook page, and with a little encouragement from her daughter, Belinda decided it was finally time to give it a go.
Opening up a whole new world
Joining her local Rock Choir in Torquay brought something into Belinda’s life that she hadn’t anticipated.
“I cannot tell you how it has opened up my world.”
What stands out most to her isn’t a particular song or even one of the remarkable places she has performed. It is the sheer number of friendships she has made.
“I now have so many fabulous friends and have met the most amazing people.”
Those friendships extend far beyond her local choir too, with Belinda particularly enjoying the opportunity to meet fellow Rockies from across the country through performances and events.
From Torquay to Carnegie Hall
In just three years, singing has taken Belinda to places she could never have imagined when she first took her daughter’s advice.
One memory in particular stands out: travelling to New York and performing I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing at Carnegie Hall.
For Belinda, singing at one of the world’s most celebrated concert venues was one of many opportunities that have made the past few years so memorable.
“The opportunities Rock Choir has given me in just the past three years have been incredible.”
Confidence, friendship and a new lease of life
Alongside the performances and experiences, Belinda has noticed another change in herself.
“Being part of Rock Choir has given me so much confidence, which I am truly grateful for.”
What began with a suggestion from her daughter to find something just for herself has become a new chapter filled with singing, friendships and experiences shared with people she may otherwise never have met.
Now, at 67, Belinda sums up the difference it has made simply.
“Rock Choir has given me a new lease of life.”
