Although Katy loved her Drama degree at Manchester University, by the end of her studies, she knew her true passion lay with singing and music.
Katy’s skills as both a singer and musician have developed through a rich variety of experiences. From her extensive training as a Performing Arts Specialist with Artis to honing her confidence performing with Gospel choir Citizen K at Blenheim Palace, recording albums with Jazz Fusion band Bassistry, and fine-tuning her harmonies both in the UK and abroad with the accomplished vintage group The Rockabellas, Katy’s journey has been diverse and enriching.
Her early years of piano lessons with an ambitious teacher, who entered her into countless recitals, also paid off. Katy has found great joy in accompanying herself as a singer-pianist in a range of scenarios, whether at The Reubens Hotel in Russell Square, teaching one-to-one students including Heat FM’s Toby Anstis, or running rehearsals as a Rock Choir Leader. She even held her nerve playing live on Magic FM on a few occasions!
Before joining the Rock Choir family, much of Katy’s work was with children and young people, where she learned a great deal about teaching and leading singing groups. Receiving the Youth Arts Award after jointly founding Colchester’s first Youth Choir helped Katy appreciate the joy of running choirs. Although her focus today is on working more with adults, she still enjoys occasionally featuring on projects with Cool4School, recording songs and educational videos for primary school-aged children around the world.
Since becoming a Rock Choir Leader in 2009, Katy has been part of many incredible events, creating countless happy memories. While her first love is running rehearsals, leading choirs in performances over the past 16 years has brought unforgettable moments, such as singing in the pouring rain at Adam’s Park stadium in High Wycombe, performing on the steps inside the Natural History Museum, leading thousands of participants in the SHINE Night Walk in London, and more recently, as part of the Mystery Bus Tour around Buckinghamshire.
Katy’s role with Rock Choir has been diverse, including helping to train new leaders and run corporate workshops. It’s also connected her to amazingly talented fellow choir leaders, allowing her to perform with them on stage as part of the Rock Choir Vocal Group at events like Proms In The Park with Josh Groban, live on Chris Evan’s Breakfast Show on Radio 2, and even form a side project, Vocally Bespoke, which led to her participation in BBC 1’s singing show Pitch Battle.
