Alex James – Rock Choir Woodford & Wanstead
For Alex James, joining Rock Choir came down to one simple thing.
“Sheer luck!”
He happened to be listening to a local radio station when he first heard about a Rock Choir in Hertfordshire. At the time, he had never come across anything like it before, but the idea immediately appealed. It felt like a great way to meet new people and try something different.
Even so, taking that first step took time.
“It took me three months to pluck up the courage and join, but I’m really glad I did.”
When he finally walked into his first session in Hertford in 2011, it marked the beginning of something that would stay with him for years to come.
From Hertford to Woodford & Wanstead
One of the things Alex values most is the flexibility that comes with being part of Rock Choir.
He began his journey in Hertford, but when life took him to a new area, he was able to continue without missing a beat.
“But the great thing about Rock Choir is you can stay a member if you move location.”
Now part of the Woodford and Wanstead choir, Alex has continued to enjoy everything that comes with weekly rehearsals and being part of a wider singing group.
“And loving it!”
Moments that stand out
Over the years, Alex has experienced a wide range of performances and opportunities through Rock Choir.
He has recorded at Abbey Road, performed at iconic venues and taken part in community events, each one adding something different to his experience.
But one moment stands above the rest.
“My best experience ever has to be our visit to Ukraine in 2017.”
During that trip, the choir performed in a series of remarkable locations, creating memories that have stayed with him ever since.
“We did a series of performances in some spectacular locations; it was an unforgettable and really special trip, which has made recent events there seem all the more poignant.”
More than just a weekly rehearsal
For Alex, Rock Choir has always been about more than just the music.
He values being part of something that extends beyond a single rehearsal room, connecting him with people not only in his own choir but across the country.
“I love the fact that I’m part of a singing community, not just in my own weekly sessions but connected with members right across the country.”
That sense of connection has been just as important as the singing itself.
A combination that keeps him coming back
Alongside the music, it is the people that have made the biggest difference.
Through Rock Choir, Alex has met new people, built friendships and shared experiences that have made his time with the choir even more meaningful.
“The experience of group singing is fantastic, but I’ve also met some amazing people and made some really good friends.”
For Alex, it is that balance of music and friendship that makes the experience what it is.
“It’s that special combination which makes Rock Choir unique.”
