Jan Mumford – Rock Choir Worthing
Jan first discovered Rock Choir through a taster session advert in September 2021 after deciding it was time to start enjoying life again following the isolation of the Covid pandemic.
Having spent months shielding during Covid, joining a local Rock Choir in Worthing became a huge step forward.
“I wanted to do something different and start enjoying life again.”
Together with two friends, Jan attended a taster session that would go on to become an important turning point.
Rediscovering confidence through singing
For Jan, Rock Choir quickly became much more than just weekly rehearsals.
“Singing has given me more confidence.”
Being part of the choir has helped improve both wellbeing and mental health, while also bringing a renewed sense of inclusion and excitement.
“It’s made me feel included.”
After spending such a long period isolated while shielding, joining the choir community helped Jan reconnect with people again through music and performances.
“It feels like I’m living again after being locked away during Covid.”
Performing at the Grand Hotel Brighton
One standout memory for Jan was performing at the famous Grand Hotel in Brighton during a charity event supporting the deaf community.
“We were invited to sing at the famous Grand Hotel in Brighton at a Deaf Charity Event.”
The iconic seafront hotel, known for its long history and landmark setting on Brighton’s promenade, made the performance feel even more special.
“It was amazing.”
A memorable experience at Rock Choir LIVE
Another unforgettable moment came during Rock Choir LIVE at the NEC in Birmingham.
“Going to the NEC was a wonderful experience.”
Like many Rockies attending the event, Jan was excited by the scale, atmosphere and energy of thousands of people coming together through singing.
Seeing Caroline Redman Lusher MBE there in person also became a memorable moment during the day.
“I got a bit starstruck!”
Feeling supported and included
One of the things Jan values most is the support and kindness shown by the people around her within the Worthing choir community.
“I have a disability and walk with a stick, Rock Choir is inclusive.”
Whether during rehearsals or performances, Jan says fellow members always look out for one another and help create a welcoming atmosphere.
“The people I sit with and all the lowers are kind and helpful, actually everyone is.”
For Jan, Rock Choir has become a place filled with music, confidence, friendship and the feeling of truly being part of something again.
