Rock Choir Supports Greg James’ Radio 1 Longest Ride for Comic Relief
When our friends at Comic Relief invited us to support BBC Radio 1 DJ Greg James during his epic “Longest Ride” challenge, we were thrilled to be involved.
Cycling an incredible 1,000km on a tandem bike from Weymouth to Edinburgh, Greg took on one of Radio 1’s biggest fundraising challenges yet, all in support of Comic Relief. Along the route, Rock Choir members came together to cheer him on, entertain the crowds and help keep spirits high during the demanding journey.
From the very first day in Weymouth through to the final finish line celebrations in Scotland, our Rockies helped bring warmth, energy and plenty of singing to the challenge.
From Weymouth to Edinburgh
The journey began in Weymouth, where Rock Choir Leader Stacey Davies Hobday and our Weymouth Rockies gave Greg a huge send-off as the challenge officially got underway.
One of the standout moments from the day came when Greg’s “Auntie Pam” stepped out from the choir to surprise him with a hug. The twist? She was one of our Rockies too. It created a genuine and emotional moment that quickly became a memorable part of the challenge coverage.
As Greg travelled through towns and cities across the UK and Ireland, more Rock Choir groups joined along the route to support him at different stages of the ride. Every stop brought its own atmosphere, with singing, cheering and fundraising helping carry the challenge forward.
Welcoming Greg over the finish line
The ride finished at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh, where Rock Choir Leader Elaine Williamson and 150 Scottish Rockies welcomed Greg across the finish line after completing the remarkable challenge.
The celebrations captured the scale of what had been achieved across the week, not only through the cycling challenge itself, but through the fundraising and support shown by communities throughout the country.
Some viewers also spotted Elaine and our Scottish Rockies appearing on BBC Morning Live during the coverage surrounding the event.
Rock Choir and Comic Relief
Supporting Comic Relief has always felt closely connected to what Rock Choir is all about: people coming together, supporting others and creating positive experiences through music.
Throughout the week, our members supported the fundraising effort in many different ways, from performances and local fundraising activities to cheering Greg on along the route. Rockies from the South of England even took part in a special castle and coastal tour as part of the wider Comic Relief activity.
Together, our Rock Choir community helped raise more than £20,000 for Comic Relief this year.
A memorable nationwide experience
Being involved in Radio 1’s Longest Ride became a proud moment for our Rock Choir community. Across the challenge, our members appeared in more than 100 press articles, sang live on BBC Radio 1 and were interviewed on BBC One’s Morning Live.
Most importantly, it gave our members the opportunity to be part of something that brought people together in support of an important cause.
The Longest Ride will be remembered for the determination shown by Greg James, the generosity of everyone who supported the challenge and the atmosphere created in communities all along the route. We were proud that Rock Choir could play a small part in helping make that happen.
