Heidi Lock – Rock Choir Bicester
Heidi discovered Rock Choir just two months after becoming a mum for the first time. Adjusting to life with a newborn left her feeling overwhelmed, and while scrolling through Instagram one day, she came across an advert for Rock Choir.
“I immediately raced to sign up for a free taster and called my Mum!”
Having always loved singing, the idea instantly excited her. Before having her son, Heidi had worked as a primary school teacher and led children’s choirs for many years, even performing at the Royal Albert Hall. Joining Rock Choir in Bicester gave her the chance to experience singing from a completely different perspective.
Finding herself again through singing
Attending that first taster session was a huge step.
“It was the first time leaving my baby boy with my husband and I was so nervous.”
But from the moment she arrived, Heidi felt welcomed and supported by those around her.
“It makes me feel like me again.”
What began as one evening for herself quickly became something much bigger, giving her time each week to reconnect with music, confidence and her own identity outside of motherhood.
A first performance to remember
Although she had not been part of Rock Choir for long, Heidi’s first public performance quickly became one of her favourite memories.
“It was at my local Tesco and I was so nervous.”
Her mum brought along her baby boy to watch, while Heidi prepared by staying up late learning every lyric.
“It was thrilling and I felt such a rush from singing and watching people’s faces light up.”
That first performance gave her a new sense of excitement and encouraged her to continue signing up for as many performances as possible.
The songs that stay with her
One song in particular has remained especially meaningful.
“One of my favourite songs to learn from the repertoire has been ‘I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing’.”
During one rehearsal, the choir stood together in a circle to sing it for the first time.
“It was magical! I felt goosebumps and the harmonies made me feel quite emotional.”
For Heidi, those moments perfectly capture what makes Rock Choir feel so special.
“It’s that feeling of singing and blending our voices together that makes this so special for me.”
A shared love of music
Rock Choir has also become something Heidi shares with her mum, who is a member too.
“My mum and I are now both members of Rock Choir in two different locations.”
Together they sing on car journeys, during family moments and even while spending time with Heidi’s young son.
“It’s brought us even closer and is a way of sharing our passion for singing.”
A community that feels like family
Over time, Heidi has found much more than a choir in Bicester.
“My Rock Choir has become a family to me.”
From support and encouragement to simple everyday kindness, she has found a community that genuinely cares.
“Attending rehearsals gets me out the house, makes me feel like me again and not just ‘Mummy’. It’s the one thing a week I do for me and it’s so special.”
Since joining, Heidi has worked hard to learn new songs and build her confidence.
“I have learnt 22 songs since starting and I am so proud of myself!”
From those first nervous rehearsals to performances and friendships, Rock Choir has become a place where she feels supported, inspired and completely herself again.
