Bobby McKean – Rock Choir Bothwell

Bobby first discovered Rock Choir through social media, although it was something he had heard about before.

When the opportunity came to join, he decided to give it a try and soon found himself becoming part of his local Rock Choir in Bothwell, near Glasgow.

What started as a new hobby quickly became one of the most enjoyable parts of his week.

Finding something to look forward to after retirement

After retiring at the age of 61, Bobby wanted to spend more time doing things that brought him genuine happiness.

Rock Choir provided exactly that.

Each week, rehearsals give him something to look forward to and an opportunity to enjoy music alongside a welcoming group of fellow Rockies.

“When the choir is in full flow”

For Bobby, the most memorable moments are often found in the rehearsal room itself.

“Every week at practice when the choir is on full flow.”

There is something special about hearing all the harmonies come together and experiencing the sound created by so many voices singing as one.

“There is nothing I do in life that gives me that warm feeling that I experience when the choir is in full flow.”

Rather than focusing on one particular event or performance, Bobby finds joy in those regular weekly moments that make being part of the choir so rewarding.

Bringing music to the local community

Although rehearsals are a highlight, Bobby also enjoys performing at local events.

“It’s just wonderful when the choir do live local events.”

These performances give members the chance to share their music with local audiences while bringing people together through singing.

Whether performing for community groups, local celebrations or public events, Bobby enjoys being part of something that spreads enjoyment to others.

A welcoming community

One of the things Bobby appreciates most about Rock Choir is the welcoming atmosphere within the group.

“Our choir has over 100 women and at the moment I am the only man.”

While there are currently fewer men in Bobby’s choir, he has always felt completely supported, included and welcomed as part of the group. Rock Choir is always keen to encourage more men to come along, give it a try and discover the joy of singing as part of such a friendly community.

“I am always made most welcome.”

For Bobby, Rock Choir is about friendship, music and belonging. It is a place where he can enjoy singing, meet wonderful people and experience the unique feeling that comes when the choir is at its very best.
