Anita Kolmel – Rock Choir Deal

Anita first discovered Rock Choir through a chance conversation while out walking her dog in her village.

She had actually signed up for a taster session previously, but nerves got the better of her and she cancelled it. After meeting someone else who also wanted to give it a try, they decided to take the step together and join their local Rock Choir in Deal.

Taking the first step together

Sometimes all it takes is the right moment and the right people around you.

Joining the Deal evening choir gave Anita the opportunity to return to something she has always loved — singing.

“I love to sing and have always been in some kind of choir or group.”

But she quickly realised there was something different about Rock Choir.

“It is fun, inclusive, I have met so many lovely people and made some really special friends.”

An unforgettable night in Birmingham

One of Anita’s standout memories has been attending the Rock Choir LIVE: The Ultimate Christmas Party at the NEC in Birmingham.

“It was brilliant. So many Rockies singing their hearts out together, what an amazing sound.”

The arena show brought together thousands of voices for a huge shared singing experience, creating an atmosphere she describes as unforgettable.

But one moment stayed with her more than any other.

“The highlight was a beautiful solo of ‘O Holy Night’ by one of the Rock Choir Leaders.”

“O Holy Night”, one of the most loved Christmas carols worldwide, made a lasting impression on Anita during the performance.

“It is my absolute favourite Christmas carol and was spine tingling.”

Music connected to treasured memories

Certain songs continue to bring special memories back to Anita.

“Recently we sang ‘Only You’, which is a song I sang with my daughter.”

That moment immediately took her back to a cherished memory of singing together years earlier, with her daughter playing recorder while Anita accompanied on guitar.

“She is now almost 40 but it brought back a lovely special memory.”

Finding time for herself

Alongside caring for her mother, who has dementia, and spending time with her 16 grandchildren, Anita describes life as constantly busy.

“Rock Choir gave me time for me and singing is a way of letting my stress go.”

Those evenings with the choir in Deal have become an important space where she can switch off, enjoy music and focus on herself for a while.

Supporting others through the choir

Over time, Rock Choir has become an even bigger part of Anita’s life.

She recently became a prefect, giving her the chance to welcome and support members and new starters within the choir community.

“I can’t imagine ever not being in Rock Choir.”

From local rehearsals and performances to unforgettable arena experiences, Rock Choir has given Anita friendship, music, support and moments she continues to treasure.
