Fiona Cousins – Rock Choir Scunthorpe
For Fiona, joining Rock Choir was something she had planned for years.
After seeing Rock Choir on Facebook, she decided it would be one of the first things she would do once she had settled into retirement. It sat patiently on her wish list, waiting for the right moment.
Life, however, had other plans.
Finding her voice again
Shortly after retiring, Fiona experienced an incredibly difficult period of ill health.
Following a series of health concerns, she was diagnosed with cancer cells in her thyroid and underwent a full thyroidectomy. Although the operation was successful, the recovery brought an unexpected challenge.
“My voice tone had altered and I couldn’t sing except in little more than a monotone.”
For someone who loved singing, losing the flexibility in her voice was heartbreaking.
“I was absolutely gutted.”
Her consultant reassured her that recovery would take time, and although it was a long journey, he was right.
“It took the best part of two years to repair itself but is now stronger than ever!!”
A wish finally fulfilled
Once her voice had recovered, Fiona finally did what she had hoped to do all along.
She joined her local Rock Choir in Kirton at the beginning of the year and immediately knew she had made the right decision.
“Absolutely love it and can’t wait to do more performances.”
After waiting several years and overcoming significant health challenges, joining Rock Choir became a celebration of everything she had worked so hard to regain.
An unforgettable day at Abbey Road
Although she is still relatively new to Rock Choir, Fiona has already enjoyed some remarkable experiences.
Her standout memory is recording at Abbey Road Studios.
Known around the world for its association with The Beatles and countless legendary artists, Abbey Road has become one of the most iconic recording studios in music history.
For Fiona, having the opportunity to record there after everything she had been through made the experience even more meaningful.
Friendship, support and looking ahead
Alongside the unforgettable performances, Fiona says one of the greatest joys of joining Rock Choir has been the people she has met.
“Everybody is so friendly, helpful and ready to support.”
The warm welcome she received has helped make the transition into choir life easy, and she is excited about everything that lies ahead.
After waiting years to join, and patiently waiting even longer for her voice to recover, Fiona is now doing exactly what she had hoped for when Rock Choir first appeared on her retirement wish list.
