Sam Smith is a musician, arranger, and creative leader whose career has been deeply interwoven with the story and development of Rock Choir. Joining the organisation in 2007 as its very first Choir Leader, Sam quickly became instrumental in shaping the ensemble’s musical identity, community ethos, and unmistakably uplifting spirit. Over the years, her contribution has grown alongside Rock Choir itself, culminating in her current role as Head of Creative. In this position, Sam oversees all bespoke vocal arrangements, crafting the soundtracks that thousands of members across the UK rehearse and perform every week. Her arrangements lie at the heart of the Rock Choir experience, bringing both emotional resonance and musical accessibility to singers of all backgrounds.
Music has been a defining thread throughout Sam’s life. She began playing the piano at just four years old, nurtured by inspiring teachers who recognised her natural affinity for music and encouraged her curiosity. Their influence helped instill in her a deep appreciation for creativity, discipline, and the transformative power of musical expression. This early passion guided her toward formal study at BIMM, where she specialised in vocals. There she trained in contemporary performance, harmony, technique, and the broader business landscape of the music industry—skills that would later prove invaluable in her creative leadership roles.
Sam’s approach to choir leadership is grounded in warmth, inclusivity, and energetic encouragement. Her sessions are known not only for their musical excellence but also for their vibrant sense of community. She has a natural talent for creating spaces where singers feel welcomed, supported, and motivated to grow in confidence. Whether working with complete beginners or experienced performers, Sam believes that everyone has a voice worth celebrating, and her leadership style empowers members to embrace that belief wholeheartedly.
Throughout her career with Rock Choir, Sam has guided singers through numerous inspiring musical milestones. She has conducted 300 performers at the Royal Albert Hall, led a solo performance at the O2 Arena, and taken 150 members to record at the iconic Abbey Road Studios. These landmark experiences have become cherished memories for the members involved, offering them extraordinary opportunities that many had never imagined possible before joining Rock Choir.
Beyond her work within the organisation, Sam has also enjoyed remarkable performance opportunities alongside a diverse range of well-loved artists. She has sung with Emeli Sandé, Sam Ryder, Katie Melua, Chesney Hawkes, Kiki Dee, Chrissie Hynde, The Kooks, and Gabrielle, among others. These collaborations have strengthened her passion for live performance and expanded her appreciation for musical partnership and artistic versatility.
Across all her endeavours, Sam remains driven by a commitment to making music meaningful, enjoyable, and accessible. Whether arranging a new piece, leading a rehearsal, or stepping onto a world-class stage, she brings enthusiasm, creativity, and authenticity to everything she does. Sam continues to inspire thousands through her work, shaping the Rock Choir journey and enriching every voice that joins in along the way.
